Search when do license points expire and you get slogans that pretend every DMV uses the same calendar. They do not. This page is the four-country hub. It leads with the United States — where most CalcGrain search demand actually sits — then points to state and country guides for UK, Florida, New York, Ontario, and Canada rather than duplicating those pages.
Model a date on the Demerit Points Expiration Calculator. Check how close a total sits to a limit on the License Suspension Risk Calculator. Tally violations on the Driving License Points Calculator. Premiums are a separate question — Insurance Premium Estimator.
United States: no single expiry date
US states mix rolling suspension windows with longer abstract retention. California’s NOTS math (4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24, 8 in 36 for many Class C drivers) is a counting trigger, not an eraser. Florida’s FLHSMV table suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18 months, or 24 in 36 months, while points remain on the driver record for at least five years from conviction. New York totals 11 points inside 24 months from the violation date (NY DMV rule as of 16 February 2026). Texas no longer runs Driver Responsibility Program surcharge points (repealed 1 September 2019).
State depth: California 4-point review, Florida points before suspension, New York 11-in-24, Texas DRP history.

United Kingdom (summary — full rules on the UK post)
GOV.UK: most endorsements remain on the driving record for 4 or 11 years depending on the offence code; totting-up looks at 12 penalty points within 3 years. Drink/drug codes such as DR10 sit in the 11-year family. For bands, new-driver rules, and worked SP30 timing, use the dedicated UK speeding points expiry article — this hub does not reprint that guide.
Canada and Australia (hub pointers)
Canada is provincial. Ontario demerits stay two years from the offence date (15-point full-licence suspension). BC and Alberta use different stay dates and intervention tables. Start with Canada: Ontario, BC & Alberta compared and the Ontario guide.
NSW never removes demerit offences from the driving record; suspension uses a 3-year window (typical limits 13 / 7 / 4). Details: NSW new vs experienced.

Expired for licensing is not erased for insurance
A point can stop counting toward a suspension threshold while an insurer still reads the underlying conviction on an MVR. Consumer education from the Insurance Information Institute treats moving violations as rating factors that often matter for several years — directional, not a statute.
Worked example: same speeding month, US-first
Conviction finalized 1 March 2024 for ordinary speeding (not drink-drive).
California: a one-point event counts in the 12-, 24-, and 36-month NOTS buckets until those windows roll past that date.
Florida: the points stay on the record at least five years from disposition; they count toward 12/18/36-month suspension thresholds only while inside those windows.
New York: they count toward the 11-point total for 24 months from the violation date.
UK, NSW, and Ontario versions of the same date live on their state and country guides rather than here. Plug the date into the expiry calculator for the licence you actually hold.
US searchers often ask “how long do points stay on your license” expecting one federal answer. The honest US-first answer is: suspension counting is a state rolling window; the abstract and the insurer can remember the conviction longer. That is why this hub’s Quick Answer leads with California, Florida, and New York rather than treating UK endorsements as the default story.
How to use the three calculators with this hub
Tally open tickets on the points calculator with the correct region. Check how close that total sits to a modeled limit on suspension risk. Date the counting window on points expiry. This article should not become a second UK endorsement encyclopedia or a second Florida statute reprint — those guides exist so Google can rank one URL per intent.
If you landed here on a UK query, finish on the UK speeding points page. If you landed on a Florida or New York query, finish on those state posts. If you landed on a Canada query, finish on the Canada comparison or the Ontario guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do license points expire in the USA?
There is no single federal clock. California Class C negligent-operator counting uses 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24, or 8 in 36 (Veh. Code 12810.5). Florida keeps points on the record at least five years while suspending on 12/18/24-point windows. New York’s persistent-violator total uses 24 months from the violation date. Always match the state DMV.
When do license points expire in the UK?
GOV.UK: endorsements stay 4 or 11 years depending on the offence; totting-up uses 12 points in 3 years. Full UK speeding and endorsement timing belongs on the dedicated UK article, not this hub.
When do California points stop counting toward a negligent-operator action?
California Vehicle Code 12810.5 treats a Class C driver as a prima facie negligent operator at 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24 months, or 8 in 36 months. That is a counting window for DMV action, not a promise the conviction vanished from every abstract.
Does Texas still use Driver Responsibility Program points?
Texas DPS states the Driver Responsibility Program was repealed effective 1 September 2019. There is no current DRP surcharge-point scheme. Convictions can still appear on a driving record for other purposes.
Do NSW demerit points fall off the record?
NSW Government guidance: demerit point offences remain on the driving record; they are never removed. Suspension math uses offences committed within a 3-year period. Unrestricted, P2, and P1 limits differ (commonly 13 / 7 / 4).
How long do Ontario demerit points stay?
Ontario.ca: demerit points stay on your record for two years from the offence date. Full-licence suspension is 15 points. See the Ontario guide and the Canada comparison hub.
If points expired, is my insurance clean?
Not necessarily. Insurers often rate from an MVR or claims database with a lookback that can outlast a licensing “active points” window. Treat expiry for suspension and expiry for premiums as different clocks.
Does paying a ticket early make points expire sooner?
Usually no. Clocks typically start from offence date, conviction date, or another date the statute names — not from how quickly you paid the fine.
How should I model my own date?
Use the Demerit Points Expiration Calculator with the region that matches your licence, check suspension risk, then confirm the official handbook. This hub summarizes; the linked guides hold the detail.
